THE CHARACTER
Character Name: Matthew Michael Murdock
Series: Daredevil, MCEU
Canon Point: end of Season Two
Character Age: 35
Background: Relevant information can be found about Matt here.
Personality: At his very core, Matt is a good man. He has good intentions. He wants to do the right thing, to help people as much as he can. Unfortunately, he's often in conflict as to what that means, and to what lengths he is willing to go in order to achieve what he feels is justice. He believes that people can be helped, can be saved, and that is the centre of his moral code. Because of this, he works pro bono cases for people who would not otherwise be able to get legal help. He is willing to put his own reputation, his own well being on the line in order to help someone who needs it. He has deep seated convictions and believes in justice, in what is right, and that is the reason that people follow him like they do.
Matt was raised Catholic, and his faith has stayed with him throughout the years. He still goes to church, and when he started his work as the Daredevil, he started going to confession more regularly. He often brings his moral issues to his priest in order to get his advice on them. Or, at the very least, to ask forgiveness for having to hurt someone in order to for justice to be found. At one point, his best friend Foggy accuses him of enjoying the fight. Of actually liking hurting bad people, and that that might be the reason he became a vigilante. While Matt's reasons for vigilantism were pure, there is a kernel of truth to Foggy's accusations. Hurting bad people makes Matt feel righteous. Not strictly in a religious sense, but that he has done some good in the world by putting away a bad person.
Part of the problem is that Matt has a lot of anger in him. About what happened to him, to his father, the injustice he constantly faces in his city. He is filled with rage and often uses his vigilantism as an excuse to take this rage out on someone he feels deserves it. Though it's clear that he feels guilt about it, taking the wounds and the beatings he receives on his nightly rounds as a perverse sort of penance. He sees himself as a martyr, and is willing to sacrifice his own well-being in order to try and put his city to rights.
He does, however, have a line he does not cross: Matt Murdock does not kill people. Or at least, he never sets out to, never wants or intends to. There are several fights over the course of the series that are particularly vicious, and it's likely that not all of the men that ran into Matt those nights survived. However, he believes more in beating them into submission and then letting the law handle the rest. He consistently clashes with other vigilantes who have a much more black and white way of looking at things, whereas Matt lurks in more of a grey area.
The other major moral dilemma Matt faces is that he, as a lawyer, is meant to be on the side of the law. However, Matt became a vigilante when he realized that the law couldn't reach everywhere, couldn't help everyone it needed to. Due to his enhanced hearing, he heard a young girl being abused by her father. Although he tried talking to both the police and the girl's mother, nothing came of it. It was then that he decided to take the law into his own hands and deal with the father directly. He continues this trend through both his law and his vigilante career, following up on cases as the Daredevil that he wouldn't be able to finish to his satisfaction as Matt Murdock, the lawyer. The line between the law and justice is blurred for Matt, and ultimately he follows his heart to determine the right and wrong actions to take. Unfortunately, this stubbornness and arrogance, this belief that he knows the right choice to make, often works against him.
Finally, Matt is unfailingly loyal to those he cares about, even if he often has no idea how to show it. He is charming, charismatic, and funny, which often plays to his advantage. He is very good with people, excellent at putting someone at their ease. Matt has a fantastic sense of humour, even able to make jokes about his blindness. When he's in a good mood, when he doesn't feel the weight of the world on his shoulders, Matt can be easygoing. Carefree, at times.
Unfortunately, he does feel that weight. He feels that the entirety of Hell's Kitchen is his responsibility, and that if he slips up even one night, he is personally guilty of whatever crime happens in his home. As a result, he leads this elaborate double life, and he ends up lying to his friends, or cutting himself off from them completely in order to protect them. He attempted to hide his Daredevil identity from his friends, purposefully pulling away from them to try to keep them safe from his vigilantism. Because of this, he's lost many friendships, and the ones he still has are strained, at best.
But as flawed as Matt is, it comes from a place of goodness. Perhaps the most important thing about Matt is that everything he does, he does because he wants the world to be a better place. Because he knows the world can be a better place. He sees the good in people and does his best to draw it out of them. Despite everything, Matt is hopeful. He wants a better world, and by god, he is going to make one, even if it kills him.
Powers/Abilities: Matt's powers come from the same chemicals that blinded him. Although the accident took his sight, his other four senses were ramped up intensely. His hearing is so sharp he is able to count heartbeats to tell how many people are in a room. He can hear conversations from several blocks away, often standing on top of his apartment building and using himself like a police scanner to listen for potential trouble in the neighborhood.
He can also echolocate, using the way sounds bounce off objects in order to judge their distance. His ability to hear to a person's heartbeat makes him something of a human lie detector, listening for changes or upticks in their pulse to try and sense when they're telling the truth. He is also able to hear broken bones, as well as smell and taste blood in the air, which is useful for finding someone who is injured.
Because of his enhanced sense of touch, Matt is able to feel changes in temperature, or the way the air moves around him. This, combined with his elevated hearing, makes him particularly skilled in fighting. He can feel the vibrations in the floorboards when someone moves, and can also detect the hum of electricity through a wall.
His fighting skills are incredible. His sense of balance is practically superhuman, which gives him the ability to perform high levels of acrobatics, gymnastics, and parkour. He is also a trained boxer, mixed martial artist, and staff fighter. His elevated senses allow him to use guns with good accuracy, but he prefers to fight with his billy clubs.
Power Nerfs (if applicable): N/A, none of his are world breaking, as far as I'm aware. Though I would understand if they needed to be toned down.
